After a 7.0 earthquake, widely considered the worst the nation has seen in over 200 years, the United States has stepped forward to offer assistance and support. The center of the quake was 25 miles West/SW of the capitol city of Port-au-Prince. The nations capitol building collapsed and the president has moved to an unknown location. Many buildings destroyed, including a hospital, as many people go unaccounted for.
The US Geological Service says that the earthquake was relatively shallow, only coming from 5 miles deep below the surface. The effects could be felt from the Dominican republic to East Cuba. A tsunami warning was also issued given the preliminary conditions coming out of Haiti. Communications have been all but lost as many heard screams of residents on phone conversations before being cut off.
The earthquakes in this region are caused by the Enriquillo Plantain Garden Fault line. There were 2 additional earthquakes following the 7.0 quake around 5PM. The latest happening at 9:43PM EST.
In South Miami, where one of the nation's largest Haitian community resides, the Mayor of Miami, Tomás Regalado and Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, met a local church and pledge support for the many resident of Miami-Dade county affected in the latest calamity. Many resident remember the outpouring of support that the city gave in 2004 when tropical storm Jeanne caused major flooding on the nation and caused deaths to top 2000! Another meeting is planned for tomorrow, Wednesday, January 13th, 2010.
